Grammy winning artist, Cyndi Lauper, performed an amazing set at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA. Touring in support of her 11th studio album, Memphis Blues, Lauper entertains her audience for nearly 2 hours with a wide array of styles ranging from classic Blues to her old classics from the 1980′s. She is a performer not to be missed.
The tour runs through September 3rd, 2010.

Grateful Dead- June 6, 1993

When summer rolls around every year I can’t help think of the old Grateful Dead tours- and how I sometimes miss those great adventures we had traveling across the country.

June 6, 1993 was my first experience photographing the Grateful Dead in an official capacity. (I wrote a letter to Dennis McNally, the band’s publicist, and explained I was a photo student wanting to take photos of a Dead show for my class.) The shows before this usually entailed me sneaking my camera in and getting shots from the nose bleeds.

Anyway, it was a complete long shot, but Dennis did call me two weeks later and granted the pass! I hung up the phone is almost total disbelief.

When I got to the Meadowlands I met up with Dennis before the show. He had to be the coolest guy, treated me so well. As he walked up to private section on the field of Giants Stadium, Dan Healy, the sound guy (who was largely responsible for giving The Dead “that” sound) crossed our path – I couldn’t believe it.

When we got to the gate that led to the stage there was a small group of very young deadhead girls. Apparentally they recognized Dennis as the publicist and tried their best to talk
their way backstage. Dennis wasn’t having any of it, though he was very kind to them. The girls started asking “why does he get to go back there and we don’t?” (referring to me)…Dennis replied with a smile, “that’s because he’s important and you’re not!”

Upon arriving to the press pit I remember thinking this is what I wanted to do with my life- concert photography. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there is and was nothing like a Grateful Dead show…and getting to stand on the stage next to one of the most famous bands in the world at Giants Stadium with 60,000 fans behind you- it’s just indescribable.

Just before the band walked on I turned around and got a great shot of my friends (Paul, Phil & Chris) waving to me from the 13th row (see below). This shot seemed to encapsulate the energy and feeling for me that night. Years later that shot appeared on the front of the official Jerry Garcia website.

The rest of the night was basically history for me. When the band took the stage fantasitc roar rumbled over the stadium. I had no idea what I was doing- I had 3 cameras around my neck and somehow took 12 rolls of film in 3 songs, this was long before digital so that was quite a feat. I always cringe when I think about this- for the first 2 songs Jerry Garcia never looked my way once and barely turned his head in my direction…so I yelled his name real loud and he looked right at me! He could not have been very happy with me, but hey, I got my shots of him looking into my lens…I would never, ever, ever do something like that now.

It was an amazing experience with great friends- if I could I would go back and do it all over again. Good times!

note: The most of the following photos have never been released or seen publicly until now.

LCD Soundsystem @ Terminal 5 in NYC. 5/23/2010

Finally getting to see (and photograph) LCD Soundsystem in New York was simply fantastic! The first 3 songs from the press pit went entirely too fast. They electrified Terminal 5 with their 4th sold-out concert in a row in their home city. I’ve never seen a place so packed. LCD’s frontman, James Murphy, is a master at what he does and continues to push the limits with their new CD, “This is Happening”.
